In ancient China, fans were one of the daily commodities as well as an ornament. They are not only deeply favored by the majority for prime quality , low price and practical use, but also suit both refined and popular taste.
Folded fans originated from Japan, inspirited by the spread of wings of the bats. During Song Dynasty, folded fans were introduced to China as tributes. Yet at that time they were not put in practical use and found its prime time during Ming and Qing Dynasty. It can be folded into a stick and immediately spreaded into sector, so it is easy to be carried and gradually became a must for the people of refined taste. Scholars of Ming and Qing Dynasty relished painting and handwriting on the folded fans, making Chinese paintings and calligraphy shine gorgeously with extensive themes and various styles. Although the size of the fan is no longer than 20 inches, it contains the images of flora, birds, worms, fish, landscape, figures and stories with various postures. Therefore Chinese fan has become a specialized art in itself.
